CHAPTER 27

The dinner rush was in full swing at Bluestone Diner as Jimmy entered. He brushed past the bright-eyed hostess who was welcoming a young couple in front of him.

“Welcome to Bluestone Diner, where happiness is… Sir! You have to wait here to be seated. Sir!”

He marched through the restaurant, avoiding the confused looks of the zigzagging wait staff. Pushing through the double swinging doors that led to the kitchen, he was met with a heat and buzz that caused a long forgotten chamber of memories to erupt.

Tyrone looked exactly as he had all those years ago when he’d shared the evening shift with him. His baseball cap was crooked and the threadbare tea-towel hung over his shoulder. Food and grease splatters stained his T-shirt like an actor from a laundry detergent commercial. Regardless of his soiled clothes, his shoes remained immaculate.

A small Hispanic guy with a unibrow and loud voice shouted the most recent order at Tyrone. “I need a Bacon and Cheddar Turkey Burger and a Classic Cheeseburger.”

Tyrone didn’t hear any of it, too distracted by the unexpected visitor who was now striding towards him.

“What the fuck are you playing at?” Jimmy demanded. He stopped just short of the hissing grill that was spitting grease from the slabs of meat. It was almost as if it were trying to protect its cook from the uninvited guest.

“What are you doing here, Jimmy? It’s not a good time.” Tyrone lifted a cast-iron grill press that was on top of two burgers and moved it to strips of bacon sizzling in their own fat.

“You set it up! You brought me to that bar last night.”

“What do you mean?”

“Who’s this guy?” Unibrow shouted. “Hey, buddy, you’re going to have to leave.”

Jimmy ignored him. “You specifically told me to meet you at that bar.”

“Yeah. So?”

“So I could accidentally bump into the barman?”

“The barman? What the fuck are you talking about?” Tyrone threw an eye on his grill as he spoke. Whatever this was about, he wasn’t going to let the food suffer.

“You wanted me to think that he was my son.”

“I’m waiting for my tuna melt!” cried a red-faced waitress from the other side of the serving shelf.

“You’ll get it as soon as this dickhead leaves,” Unibrow shouted.

“Listen, this isn’t a good time,” Tyrone barked. “We’re right in the middle of the dinner rush.”

“Are you trying to fuck with my mind? Who was he?” Jimmy demanded.

“Who was who? I don’t understand what you’re talking about. Seriously.” He turned back to the grill and flipped two burgers.

“Listen, dude,” Unibrow insisted as he took hold of Jimmy’s elbow. Jimmy shoved him away with his arm.

“Don’t fucking touch me,” he shouted before turning back to Tyrone. “The barman who looked miraculously like Chelsea. And me for that matter?”

“Did he? I don’t even remember.”

“Bullshit! You set something up. You planted him there to make me think that Chelsea was never murdered. That she actually had a child.”

Tyrone looked wide-eyed at Jimmy. “Come on, buddy. You’re not making any sense.
